As the Summer rages on and Hoosiers are trying to quench their thirst, a new article has been circulating in local and national news. “Water expert warns Americans about ‘chemical cocktail’ in tap water contaminated with dangerous PFAS chemicals.”
This isn’t the first time an article has been made about PFAS and ‘Forever Chemicals’. We’ve even made a few posts about it ourselves. The difference between this article and others like it, was the level of information provided by their water expert.
In the article, CEO Rich Razgaitis, breaks down some of the statistics about drinking water. Most Americans, and Hoosiers, have concerns about their water. For a vast majority of people, the water they drink comes from two sources: their tap, which is from either a well or some form of city utilities, or from a bottle of water. According to Razgaitis, untreated tap water versus a bottle of water was:
“like choosing between packs of cigarettes.”
Quite the harsh analogy. Yet, the facts back him up.
City Utilities, like Fort Wayne, Columbia City, or Huntertown water, only filters out what the EPA and other government agencies tell them too.
That doesn’t make the water bad or unsafe. In fact, it’s their job: to make the water safe to drink.
But safe is broad spectrum.
Most would say that the safe amount of “allowed chloroform” or “allowed PFAS” should be zero. Yet, the data says that’s not the case. Using the tap water database from the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org), a non-profit organization, you can enter your zip code and see what contaminants exceed their health guidelines.
One thing to note, is that many of the contaminants don’t have a legal limit attached to them. They’re over a threshold that scientists believe would affect a human, but the water is still labeled as safe to drink by the City Utilities.
We tested out some of the top areas we service: Fort Wayne, Columbia City, Huntertown, and Churubusco. These are the results:

In the article, when continuing to comment on drinking water alternatives, they state:
“that microplastics found in bottled water become nanoplastics because they don’t biodegrade, and individual consume about one credit card’s work of plastic every week.”
So, what’s the Solution?
In the middle of all these numbers, chemicals, plastics, contaminants, and fear, how can a consumer trust the water they’re using?
